KUALA LUMPUR – The trailer driver behind the accident, which caused the collapse of iron scaffolding at a construction site of the Sungai Besi–Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) at the Middle Ring Road Two (MRR2) near Desa Tun Razak, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur was tested positive for drugs.

The Director of Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said that the driver will be remanded under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“The 40-year-old trailer driver originated from Perak did not sustain any injury from that event,” he said.

According to him, two passengers in the van died during the accident. They were namely, Nurina Edwin Abdullah, 47, from Kampung Baru Sungai Chedong, 26500 Maran, Pahang and Norhayati Abdullah, 42, from Kampung Jerang Belanga, Bagan Terap, 45300 Sungai Besar, Selangor.

Both victims were workers at the Sensata Technologies factory in USJ and they died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the factory van driver, Muhd Fairus Mohd Yusof (47) from Batu 8, Gombak fracture his left shoulders, had inflammation in his lungs and internal bleeding.

Besides that, another passenger of the van, Zakiyyah Yakop, 51, from PPR Jalan Jelatek Datok Keramat sustained injuries on her right thigh and is currently being treated at the hospital.

Zulkefly said, the incident happened when they were on their way to work.

According to him, the 6.00 pm tragedy involved an orange Volvo trailer that rammed into the pedestrian bridge steel frame at the construction site.

Due to the incident, the iron scaffolding and the frame of a construction site fell on the both sides of the main road, a squashed a blue Toyota Hiace van which was travelling from Ampang heading towards the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS). – MalaysiaGazette
