MELAKA – The Melaka Hospital is reported to be full of patients and many are ‘stranded’ in the emergency department while waiting for a bed to be available.

China Press reported that some patients needed to wait up to four days before they could get a hospital bed.

According to its source, to accommodate the increasing number of patients, every corner of the hospital, including the parking lot for doctors and tarred space have been used to place Covid-19 patients.

As a hybrid hospital, the Melaka Hospital needs to accept non-Covid-19 patients and yet, it also needs to handle around 80 to 110 Covid-19 patients daily.

“The daily hospital bed utilisation rate at the common ward and intensive care unit (ICU) on average is 50 percent, however, it could reach above 80 percent at times.

“The situation caused many patients to wait at the emergency department as they cannot be admitted into the ward.

“The continuous increment of patients caused the emergency department to cripple and they had to install tents to house the patients for the mean time,” he said.

According to the source, on the worst case scenario, a patient had to wait up to four days before they are admitted into the ward.
