Immigration officer jailed, fined for releasing foreigners

SHAH ALAM – An Immigration Officer arrested during Ops Selat is sentenced to one day in prison by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to accepting bribery and releasing foreigners without going through the proper procedures between 2017 and 2018.

Judge Rozilah Salleh also sentenced Muhammad Khairunazim Ab. Rahman, 31 to RM15,000 fine for each charges.

Besides that, the RM5,000 cash found in the Charles Berkeley wallet and red PsVita container, foreign notes Turkish Lira TRY10,000 in a brown envelope, silver Mitsubishi Triton L200 2WD Double CA two wheeled drive are also forfeited to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to the first charge, Muhammad Khairunazim with the Grade KP19 position, on November 2017 at the Operation Centre, Security Control Department, Immigration Office, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, was given RM200 in bribery by a local citizen.

For the second charge, Muhammad Khairunazim, on 10 January 2018, at Level 2 carpark, Block C, KLIA, was given RM800 of bribe in cash by a local citizen.

The local citizen was the same middleman to release Chinese nationals from being taken actions under Immigration Act 1959/63.

For the first charge, the accused can be fined up to RM100,000, imprisoned for up to 10 years or both upon conviction according to Section 25 (1) of the MACC Act 2009 and is punishable under Section 25 (2) of the same act.

The second count of charge carries a punishment of up to two years in prison, or fine, or both according to Section 25(1) MACC Act 2009 and is punishable under Section 25(2) of the same act.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor from MACC Fadhli Ab. Wahab, meanwhile, the accused was unrepresented.

Rozilah, while delivery the verdict and sentenced urged the accused to regard that as a lesson and he needs to repent.

“You should be grateful that you were caught early so that you do not regard the money from bribery as a form of enjoyment,” he said. –MalaysiaGazette
