KUALA LUMPUR – A lorry driver pleaded not guilty for driving under the influence of drugs at the Magistrate Court today.
The accused, Ardi Latif, 25, made the plea after the charges were read to him before Magistrate Amanina Mohamad Anuar.
Ardi was charged for driving under the influence of methamphetamine and amphetamine, where he could not control the vehicle and caused injuries to another motorist, Nik Adlee Saha Nik Ahmad Fauzi.
The accused was charged for committing the offence at Jalan Segambut Utara heading towards Jalan Ipoh at 2.40 pm on 6 September.
The charges were framed under Section 44 (1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (amendment 2020) and is punishable under the same section, which carries the maximum imprisonment of 10 years and fine between RM30,000 and 50,000. He would also lose his eligibility to drive for a period of not less than seven years upon conviction.
The court set bail at RM7,000 and confiscated the accused’s driver’s license until the case is resolved.
The Magistrate also fixed 11 November for the mention of case.
During the 2.40 pm accident on 6 September, the lorry driven by the accused lost control before ramming into two Perodua Myvi. He also hit Proton X70, Honda HRV and Peugeot 208 FL that were waiting for at the Jalan Ipoh traffic light.
The strong force from the accident caused a yellow Perodua Myvi to be wrecked. However, its 45-year-old driver was safe and sustained light injuries on his face.
The police verified that the urine test of the lorry driver turned positive for drugs. -MalaysiaGazette
