KUALA LUMPUR – The Member of Parliament of Pontian, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has withdrawn himself as the candidate of the Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker.

He made the announcement on his withdrawal during a news conference at the Parliament today. Ahmad was the only candidate from the government’s bloc for the position.

The opposition bloc on the other hand, had nominated the Teluk Intan MP who is also the former Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat, Nga Kor Ming, representing Pakatan Harapan (PH).

All MPs from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and four independent MPs have decided to be excluded from voting.

Earlier today, the Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin emphasised that the party would reject any motion to appoint three Deputy Speakers of Dewan Rakyat.

On 29 September, Ahmad, who is also the Secretary-General of UMNO was acquitted and discharged by the Kuala Lumpur High Court over his charges of failing to declare the RM2 million received from former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and giving false testimony to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Judge Datuk Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh delivered the verdict after Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohd Mukhzany Fariz Mohd Mokhtar, informed the court that the prosecution had withdrawn all charges against Ahmad after the latter agreed to pay the RM1.1million compound. -MalaysiaGazette
