KUALA LUMPUR – The High Court ordered Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to register Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) as a political party within 14 days.
The lawyer representing MUDA, Lim Wei Jiet said that the court also rejected the reasons given by the government that the party led by the Member of Parliament (MP) of Muar, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is prejudice to the national security.
“What happened at the court today favoured MUDA. The court ordered the Home Minister to register MUDA within 14 days.
“The court was of the opinion that the Home Minister’s reason to reject Muda’s appeal on grounds of prejudice to national security was baseless,”
“We thank the court and hope that the government would not appeal to this verdict and allow MUDA to be registered so that the democracy and plights of the youths in Malaysia can continue to flourish in Malaysia,” he said during a news conference outside the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex today.
Earlier, Syed Saddiq, the former Minister of Youth and Sports along with 12 others individuals filed a fresh judicial review application to challenge the decision by the Home Minister and the ROS that rejected their appeal to register MUDA as a political party on 21 September.
and named the Home Minister and the ROS as the first and second respondent
They sought for a declaration that their application to register MUDA as a political party was in order and in compliance with all the requirements under the Societies Act 1966.
They also sought for a mandamus order for both respondents to register MUDA as a political organisation within 14 days from the date of the order.
Besides that, the plaintiffs also sought for aggravated and exemplary damages and other relief and orders deemed fit by the court. – MalaysiaGazette
