MELAKA – Covid-19 infections among students in Melaka is getting concerning after the Omicron variant was detected in a vocational college in the state.

Melaka State Health Director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said that 261 students from four educational institutions in that state have been tested positive of Covid-19.

“To me, this is getting worrying. From the four education clusters, we have one Omicron variant case in a college.

“To me, Omicron or not, the preventive measures are the same. Therefore, we need to be alert, obey the standard operating procedures (SOP) and such,” he said.

Commenting further, he said that the 261 students from the four educational institutions are the 39 cases from the Jalan Kemendor Cluster in Jasin (Kolej Vokasional Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Isnin).

“58 case from the Jalan Hang Tuah Jaya 2 Cluster of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), 135 cases from the Jalan Tun Telani Cluster of Kolej Vokasional Melaka Tengah (KVMT), and 29 cases from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Sultan Muhammad that is known as the Jalan Pengkalan Batu Cluster,” he said.

He also did not deny the possibility that more Covid-19 positive cases will be discovered among school students.

“Yes. I won’t be surprised if other schools, especially the boarding schools will become the next victims if we are not careful.

“At the moment, Melaka has recorded 15 Omicron variant cases. Nine in the Melaka Tengah district, three each in Alor Gajah and Jasin,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
