KUALA LUMPUR – The rejection of the motion to amend the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) by the opposition parties at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday should have given a clear lesson to the Barisan Nasional (BN).
The Chairman of BN, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also hoped that the people could evaluate how fragile and risky the current government is.
Therefore, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the President of UMNO wanted BN to leave the claws of collaboration in the weak government.
“If you ask me about the party and my opinion, I think, everything is very clear. Our stand and decision during the UMNO General Assembly were rational.
“I hope that the people out there can see how fragile and risky the existing government is. It is also a huge lesson to political parties such as UMNO and BN.
“All these only strengthen the spirit and my belief that UMNO should rise again as a big, strong and respected political power,” he said in a statement.
86 Members of Parliament (MP) from the opposition voted against the motion from the government to amend Subsection 4(5) SOSMA with only 84 MPs voted in favour of the motion.
Ahmad Zahid said, the MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH) had broken their promise under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government and PH earlier.
According to him, the action of PH MPs showed that they have no interest to create political stability in the country.
“PH is very inclined to forget their promises and commitment easily. In my opinion, it is useless for us to continue holding on to their promises.
“The government must have its own majority. Strong majority and not hoping for the courtesy and discretion of the opposition,” he said.
He added, what transpired at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday showed that the government is no longer being respected. It is also a sign that the government is unstable and unable to present and implement a good policy successfully.
“We must be able to bring forth good policy and motion without hoping for the support from the opposition who loves to fish in murky waters.
“What happened now (the failure to amend SOSMA 2012) is an embarrassment to the government.
“We need to redeem and strengthen ourselves strategically and immediately,” said Ahmad Zahid. -MalaysiaGazette
