One step at a time

You know that feeling when you have been traveling and you just feel exhausted? Even if you were traveling for fun, and enjoyed every moment of your trip, you somehow crave stability, routine, and rest.

That fatigue that you feel when you want to collapse in bed after a long travel day. Even if you’ve been sitting in a car or on a plane all day. That’s exhaustion. Sometimes, the exhaustion doesn’t go away after a long sleep. It sticks around for weeks after your trip.

This is how I feel about my cancer journey. Except that, the fatigue and exhaustion will not stick around for weeks after, but for about two to five years after completing cancer treatments.

That weary part of me says, “I know I’m strong, but I’m tired.”

The hopeful optimist part of me says, “Never give up. Never stop believing. Never stop fighting. One day you will thank yourself for never giving up.”

I am learning to take life one day at a time and walking one step at a time. By putting one foot in front of the other and making the most that I can of each day.

One step at a time. It is like learning to ride a bicycle. Or falling in love. It is going to happen when it is supposed to happen. There is no need to rush. Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

Sometimes, we feel that we cannot wait any longer, and yet we cannot see the end in sight. When we need to find the strength, it is the faith that makes us stronger. The only way we will get there is one step at a time.

God knows we are tired. God knows we are upset. But we should also know that God will not put us in a situation we can’t handle. Whether or not we have someone to comfort us, remember that God is always there for us.

Obsessing about the future creates anxiety. Fear can hold us prisoner of our own despair. Hope will set us free.

Permanent happiness comes from us choosing to be happy no matter what.
