KUALA LUMPUR – Besides the Members of Parliament (MP) and State Assembly Members (ADUN), the clauses under the Anti-Party Hopping Bill should also include the Senators in Dewan Negara, said Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz.

The Padang Rengas MP explained that if a member of the Senate change party, his or her action is equivalent to that of the MP or ADUN as it would affect the people in a constituency represented by the Senator.

“We cannot think that the Dewan Negara institution does not have the similar importance. We need to consider their roles. They are also important in making laws.

“From the protocols, the Dewan Negara is above the Dewan Rakyat although they are appointed to be there,” he said during the debate of Constitution (Amendment)(No.3) 2022 Bill at the special sitting of the Fourth Meeting of the Fifth Term of Dewan Rakyat today.

According to Mohamed Nazri, it is not possible for a non-dominant person in a party to be nominated as Senator at the state level.

“To me, the members of Dewan Negara who are appointed by DUN needs to be bound to the party-hopping law as it happened during GE14 in 2018. A huge portion of them from Barisan Nasional (BN) left the party and supported the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

“BN was affected by their attitude and that’s why, I suggest that they should be included in this anti-party hopping act,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
