PUTRAJAYA – The decision of UMNO’s Supreme Council meeting who chose Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the candidate for Prime Minister if the Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the 15th General Election (GE15) proves that the Malay political party is getting stronger.
Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri said that the unity portrayed by UMNO yesterday proved the allegations that there are several factions in UMNO baseless.
“I thank the President, Deputy President, Top Five and all Supreme Council Members of UMNO for unanimously voicing their support for me as the candidate of Prime Minister after GE15 if BN wins the general election.
“This shows that UMNO continues to be united although various quarters claimed that there are camps and such in UMNO. The decision yesterday clearly showed that those rumours were untrue.
“UMNO continues to be strong. It has strong solidarity. There is no camps in UMNO,” he said.
Yesterday, the UMNO Supreme Council unanimously nominated Ismail Sabri as the candidate of Prime Minister if BN wins GE15.
Chaired by its President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the meeting wanted Ismail Sabri to continue his service in facing and winning GE15.
Meanwhile, on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the opposition, Prime Minister gave in to the decision of UMNO and would not pursue it after its expiry on 31 July.
“Yesterday, the decision was made until 31 July. We will wait until that date. As of yesterday, the UMNO Supreme Council said that there is no need to continue with the MoU. That decision remains as of today.
“Regardless, we will wait until or after 31 July,” he said.
However, any changes will be brought to the UMNO Supreme Council before the finalised decision is taken to the government under his leadership.
“Usually, we will look at the decision of the Supreme Council as we usually need to follow that. If there are any changes, I need to bring it back to the UMNO Supreme Council. That is the decision of the Supreme Council.
“As the Vice-President of UMNO, of course I am subjected to the decisions made by the Supreme Council of UMNO. The decision is until 31 July. It’s still April now. Let’s wait. If there is not further decision, we will carry that out.
“If there are any changes, the Supreme Council will discuss again,” he added. -MalaysiaGazette
