KUALA LUMPUR – The resignation of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as the Prime Minister was the biggest miscalculation in the contemporary political history and the history will debate about this event critically, said former Attorney-General (AG), Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.

He said, he did not understand why Dr Mahathir had to resign and he will continue to remember that incident until the moment he stepped into his graves.

According to him, the resignation should not happen although Dr Mahathir explained that his objective was to avoid UMNO from taking over the government.

“In my book, I spoke about the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and that was a heartbreaking situation. However, I will remember 24 February 2020 until the day I die.

“On this date, Dr Mahathir resigned and the PH government fell. I was rather critical towards him and until now, I do not understand why he had to resign,” he said in an interview with Nanyang Siang Pau.

He said, in the 21st century political science and international politics, that situation will not happen.

“Without any discussion and negotiation with anyone else, a Prime Minister who received the mandate of the people and had the support resigned. That was a situation which could be avoided,” he said.

Following Dr Mahathir’s resignation, Tommy said, many things beyond expectations had happened and the effect was horrible.

“Therefore, the history will evaluate Dr Mahathir critically,” he said.

According to Tommy, he also felt strange that PH was not angry with Dr Mahathir’s decision.

Tommy said, changes and betrayal are common in any coalition or mixed government.

“Despite losing the majority, Dr Mahathir could sustain like what happened to the two Prime Ministers after Dr Mahathir.

“Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob never faced any no confidence motion and until today, we cannot determine if they have the support from 112 Members of Parliament. Dr Mahathir felt that he did not have the majority support. What caused Dr Mahathir to believe that?” Tommy questioned. -MalaysiaGazette
