KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the one-month free fare for all public transport under the management of RapidKL and Komuter under Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) beginning today.
He said, the government will be subsidising RM140 million for the one-month free service under RapidKL and RM15 million for Komuter fare under KTMB.
“We receive complaints about heavy traffic congestion in the capital and the government agrees to provide free public transport. We hope that with the free fare, we can reduce the traffic jam and the consumers will continue to use this transport, not only for a month but to continuously use it to commute to their workplace,” he said after launching the MRT Putrajaya Phase 1 Line at the Sri Damansara MRT Station today.
Earlier, he rode the MRT with the staff from RapidKL from the Kampung Batu MRT Station.
The MRT Putrajaya Line which is developed in two phases will service approximately two million residents in the corridor from Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya, the government administration centre.
The MRT Phase One Line involves the journey from Kwasa Damansara until Kampung Batu, meanwhile, the almost completed second phase will involve the route from Kampung Batu to Putrajaya.
The Phase Two Line will pass strategic areas including the Kuala Lumpur city centre with underground stations such as Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Ampang Park, Persiaran KLCC and Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).
The 57.7 kilometres MRT Putrajaya Line has 36 stations involving 27 elevated stations and 9 underground stations with the cost of RM30.53 billion.
On the fare subsidy, Ismail Sabri said that each passenger would be spending about RM200 each month if the government does not provide the subsidy.
“The actual fare for the public transport under RapidKL is RM200 per pax each month, however, the government gives RM150 in subsidy and the consumers only need to pay RM50 each month.
“The government provides privilege to the people through RapidKL, including the privilege for people with disabilities (OKU), students and senior citizens,” he said. -MalaysiaGazette
