SHAH ALAM – The founder of Sugarbook pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate Court for publishing posts about sugarbaby which caused public uproar two weeks ago.
The accused, Chan Eu Boon, 34, made the plea after the charges were read to him before Magistrate Sabreena Bakar@Bahari.
Also known as Darren Chan, he was clad in grey shirt and arrived at the Shah Alam Courts Complex in handcuffs at 9.40 am.
According to the charge paper, Eu Boon was charged for publishing a post titled, ‘Top 10 Sugarbaby Universities in Malaysia’ with the intention to create public fear and anxiety.
The offence was committed on 10 February at 10.00 am and the post was also seen at around 6.26pm on the same day at a public university in Shah Alam, Selangor.
He is charged under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code which carries the sentence of a maximum of two years in prison, or fine, or both upon conviction.
Meanwhile, Deputy Public Prosecutor, Aliff Ashraf Anuar Sharuddin suggested the bail of RM100,000 as the offence involves public interest.
“The application was then viewed by the public and caused fear and anxiety,” he said.
However, the defence counsel, T. Shashi Devan and Pauling Hee objected the proposal. According to Shashi, his client does not have the risk to flea and it would be enough for the court to grant a lower bail.
“The accused is still single and had to postpone his wedding due to the situation in the country,” he said.
Sabreena then allowed the accused to be bailed at RM10,000 with a surety and to surrender his passport to the court.
The court then fixed 26 March for the mention of the case.
The accused who originated from Minden, Gelugor in Penang was arrested at 4.30 pm on 17 February at a condominium in the capital. –MalaysiaGazette
