KUALA LUMPUR – The third body in the incident of a gantry crane component collapse at the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) construction site near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras, last Monday was finally extricated earlier today.
The Director of Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, Nordin Pauzi said that the body of the victim identified as Mu Tong Zheng, a Chinese national who was previously reported to have fallen and was caught between tracks under construction, was extricated by firefighters at 3.58 am.
He said that victim could not be extricated earlier as the firefighters were facing difficulties due to the unstable construction structure and the victim was stuck between construction beam and the gantry crane structure.
“We went up (the structure) at about 3.00 am to make a risk assessment before three firefighters in personal protective equipment suits went up and brought his body down using a crane.
“The operation to retrieve the victim took half an hour, and the body was in a state of decomposition,” he told reporters at the scene.
Nordin said, with that, the last body has been retrieved and the three-day rescue operation which began on Monday has been completed. The case has been handed over to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Cheras District Police Chief, ACP Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said that the body was sent to the Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital in Cheras for post-moretem.
On Monday (22 March), three Chinese national construction workers were killed whila a local motorist sustained serious injuries following the incident where one of the gantry crane structure at the SUKE construction site collapsed and crushed a moving vehicle. -BERNAMA
