KUALA LUMPUR – UMNO Veteran, Tan Sri Shahrir Samad said that it is time for the party to create a separation between the party leadership and the governance of the government.

He said, they need to revise that and the party led by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid needs to do something based on the current dire needs.

“Perhaps, it is time to create a separation between the party’s leadership and the governance of the government so that the concept of ‘the party is the government and the government is the party’ can be revised. Perhaps, this concept is no longer suitable in the current and future era?

“Should the new alignment of UMNO and its plight bring us to the concept of ‘party controls the government’ but there is also a room for mutual understanding and respect between the ‘government’ and ‘public administration’?” Shahrir questioned.

Elaborating further, he said that UMNO has the strength as a political party as it places the voices of the grassroots as the direction of the party.

“After 75 years as a political party, the extraordinary situation faced by us today opens opportunity for UMNO to return to the national politics,” he said.

The former Chairman of FELDA said that his proposal for UMNO is merely to ensure that the party is sustainable.

Last Tuesday, Shahrir said that UMNO can no longer hold on to the tradition where its President must be the candidate as the Prime Minister.
