KUALA LUMPUR – The Member of Parliament of Parit Sulong, Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad resigned as the Minister of Higher Education with immediate effect.

According to the UMNO Women Chief, the decision was taken as she obeys her party’s decision in withdrawing support towards Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

“I would like to thank the Prime Minister for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Minister of Higher Education in the Federal Government.

“However, based on the decision of the UMNO Supreme Council on 3 August 2021, I, as the UMNO Women Chief, accept the party’s decision and resign as the Minister of Higher Education, Cabinet Minister of the Federal Government with immediate effect. The decision of the party will be executed when the Parliament sits,” she said in a statement today.

Noraini is the second minister from UMNO who resigns after the former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah relinquish his position on Tuesday.

According to Shamsul Anuar, the decision was made after considering several decisions and position of the party.

Meanwhile, Noraini also said that she will continue to do her best in managing the country in facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I would like to thank everyone, especially the staff of the Higher Education Ministry and all stakeholders of the Ministry who have helped me a lot in carrying out my duty,” she added.

Noraini did not attend the news conference held by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Auditorium along with 30 other Members of Parliament (MP) from Barisan Nasional (BN).

The news conference was held to state their position in supporting the PN government until a motion of confidence is carried out on Muhyiddin at the Parliament in September. –MalaysiaGazette
