KUALA LUMPUR – If the pioneer travel bubble project to Langkawi Island, Kedah fails, no other travel bubble to other destination would be opened in the country, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussien.
The Senior Minister of Defence said that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) needs to prove that the pioneer project can be implemented safely.
“This pioneer project in Langkawi, regardless of phases, we can travel inter-district and interstate. This is for the welfare of the people, nothing to do with the economy.
“This decision was made as the relevant ministry understands and considers the mental health and welfare of the people as they have been locked up at home for very long. Although we know that it is not easy to allow interstate travel now,” he said during a news conference at the Parliament today.
At the same time, Hishammuddin also emphasized that individuals who visit Langkawi Island beginning 16 September need to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) to avoid the spike of Covid-19 cases.
“Those who visit Langkawi need to be disciplined and complete their vaccination.
“If it fails (travel bubble), we will not open it to other destinations. MOTAC needs to prove that they can do it in Langkawi first,” he said.
On 9 September, the government announced the SOP in conjunction with the pioneer travel bubble project to Langkawi Island beginning 16 September.
The MOTAC Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that the SOP is only limited to individuals who have completed two doses of vaccination.
She added, day trips and overnight trips are allowed under the condition that they need to book their accommodation and travel tickets earlier. -MalaysiaGazette
