KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has no plan to withdraw Competent Driving License (CDL) from drivers above the age of 70.
Its Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that the ministry has never issued such order.
“The ministry has never issued any order for senior citizens above the age of 70 to return their driving licenses. Never.
“The ability to driver differs from one individual to another. For instance, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Langkawi can drive way better than those crazy drivers on the road,” he said during the Ministers’ Question Time (MQT) at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Last Sunday, Ka Siong said that the withdrawal of license of limiting license to individuals based on their age should be their last resort, after evaluating the fitness of a person to drive in a transparent manner through an established test.
Earlier the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) suggested to the government to limit the issuance of CDL to senior citizens as their health condition may contribute to road accidents.
Ka Siong said, the government cannot discriminate the senior citizens above the age of 70 as there are many other factors that would cause road accidents and age is not one of it.
“We cannot discriminate those above the age of 70.
“This is not the stand of MoT and we have no intention to change as the ability to drive is not based on age factor,” said Ka Siong. -MalaysiaGazette
