MELAKA – The residents of Melaka think that it is not the right time to dissolve the Melaka State Assembly amid Covid-19 pandemic.

They are worried that the state election may increase the risk of Covid-19 infection.

S Gopal

Retiree, S Gopal, 55, did not agree with the dissolution of state assembly and hoped that an election would only be held after the end of the term.

“Why dissolve now? The cases in Sabah increased after the state election. Why are they doing this to the people? We just managed to reduce the cases to under 10,000,” he said, sharing his concerns that the Melaka state election may cause Covid-19 cases to spike and put the people at risk.

“Just let anyone become the temporary Chief Minister. Do not turn the people into victims,” he added.

Zainal Mohd Som

Meanwhile, private sector employee, Zainal Mohd Som, 50, said that the people are tired reading political news daily.

“There is a story about our politicians daily. We are tired. Now, the state assembly is dissolved. We vote, and then, they squabble again,” he said when met by MalaysiaGazette.

Nevertheless, if the people of Melaka have been determined to vote, there is nothing else that he can say.

The youths in Melaka also felt that the political situation has given a bad impact to the businesses and youths.

Zulaika Samsul

For Zulaika Samsul, 22, the youths are sick of the uncertain political situation and they are also being forced to go out to vote in an unsuitable time.

“The youths need to vote, at the same, this is not the right time. In a dire situation, there is no choice, we need to vote, right?

“I hope that the politicians will think about the fate of the youths and businesses in Melaka. Too many changes in standard operating procedures. It is confusing!” she said, adding that whoever rules Melaka must not neglect the businesses and youths.

Idris Md Nor

Government retiree, Idris Md Nor, 56 also expressed his shock after finding out that the Melaka government has been dissolved.

“The government just took over and we need to vote again?

“There’s no choice, we need to vote but I’m shocked that we need to vote at this time,” he added, explaining that it is the people’s job to vote and choose their leaders but those elected must carry out their duty properly.

“I don’t know what is the problem. We feel that everything is OK. I don’t see the problem.

“There is a change in Melaka since the government changed. The roads are better, everything is well taken care of. I don’t know what is lacking,” he added.

Johny Yap

For self-employed Johny Yap, 44 he hoped that the new government would not neglect the people.

“I am shocked that I need to vote again but it is alright, it is our duty as the people. It is not a good time to vote but it would also be a problem if we do not have a leader.

“There is no choice but to go home and vote,” said the Bachang born man.

Yesterday, the Speaker of Melaka, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that the Governor of Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam has agreed to dissolve the Melaka State Assembly with effect of 4 October 2021, after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali wrote a letter to the Governor stating that four state assemblymen have withdrawn their support to the state government. – MalaysiaGazette
