KUALA LUMPUR – The RM1 charge will be reimposed for interbank cash withdrawal via the automatic teller machine (ATM) involving several banks in the country beginning February next year.
Earlier today, CIMB Malaysia issued a statement on its social media, informing its customers on the development.
“Effective 1 February 2022, a transaction fee of RM1.00 will be charged for interbank cash withdrawal transactions performed other than at CIMB Bank/CIMB Islamic ATMs/self-service terminals.
“You can continue to perform cash withdrawal transactions at our ATMs/self-service terminals without fee,” the bank said.

Meanwhile, Maybank also issued a similar statement on the RM1 interbank cash withdrawal fee that would be implemented from 1 February 2022 onwards.
“Starting from 1 February 2022, the ATM interbank cash withdrawal fee of RM1.00 will be reinstated.
“Maybank customers can continue to perform cash withdrawal transactions at Maybank’s ATM for free,” it said.

Based on a social media search, other banks such as Citibank and Kuwait Finance House (KFH) will also be reinstating the charge.
Meanwhile, most of the netizens expressed their shock on the sudden announcement as the country is still battling with Covid-19.
Some of them did not agree and requested the banks to review their decision as they claimed that there was no formal announcement from the government on reimposing the RM1 interbank withdrawal charge.
In April 2020, the government announced the exemption of RM1 cash withdrawal charges through all Malaysian Electronic Payment System Sdn Bhd (MEPS) ATM starting from 6 April 2020.
The announcement was made by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob when he was the Senior Minister of Defence during the reign of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the Prime Minister, explaining that the measure would prevent the public from crowding the tellers at the bank to withdraw money. -MalaysiaGazette
