KUALA LUMPUR – DAP said that many UMNO leaders, including its President who claimed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) has nullified was the agenda of the party.
Its Secretary-General, Anthony Loke said, the failure of the government in raking support for the motion to amend Subsection 4(5) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday was not to the extent which needed the Parliament to be dissolved.
“We, at the opposition, did not have any negotiation with the government on SOSMA. We only knew about the motion to extend the providence under the SOSMA Act yesterday.
“When we rejected the motion, it did not mean that the SOSMA Act is abolished. SOSMA is still here, SOSMA is not abolished. Only, the providence to detain a person for 28 days is not extended after 31 July through the motion,” he said during the debate of the bill to amend Federal Constitution during the second reading at the Parliament today.
According to Anthony, as an opposition, they held on to the principles that they would voice out about their disagreement of a policy. If they agreed with a matter, they would state their agreement. If they did not agree, they would also state their disagreement.
He also denied allegations that Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has lost the confidence from the House.
“If anyone question about Ismail Sabri losing the confidence, bring the motion of confidence to the Dewan Rakyat. We will be neutral and ensure that the motion is passed.
“However, it was a win for the Parliament yesterday. It showed that not all motions tabled by the executive could be passed as the Parliament was not a rubber stamp.
“Yesterday, the oppositions did not expect that the government would fail or lose the motion because the government did not lose the majority. The government still has 114 to 119 Members of Parliament but only 84 were present. 86 oppositions were present,” he said. – MalaysiaGazette
