KUALA LUMPUR – While many are complaining about the price increment of chicken and pork, do you realise that the prices of seafood have also gone up?

The President of Fish Industry General Association, Chia Tian Hee said, the uncertain weather, high Ringgit exchange rate and the lack of manpower have caused the seafood prices to increase by 10 percent.

According to him, the Southwest monsoon has caused big waves and sank six fisherman boats in Selangor.

“Many fishermen dare not go to the sea and this causes the seafood produce to decrease between 20 to 30 percent.

“This condition causes the increment of seafood prices by 10 percent and this can be seen clearly in white prawn, mackerel (ikan kembung) and squid.

“The price fluctuation depends on the weather and harvest of the fishermen when they go to the sea,” he told China Press.

Besides that, the Chinese newspaper also reported that the fishery industry is still facing issues with the shortage of manpower, especially after many foreign workers have returned to their home countries during the pandemic.

The situation is made worse when the application for new foreign workers is tough and made it difficult for the fishermen to go to the sea.

Meanwhile, according to the seafood wholesaler, the sales of seafood is not very encouraging due to the inflation and the people are viewing seafood as luxury food. -MalaysiaGazette
